I posted this PURELY SCIENTIFIC POLL a week ago that asked the question – “who are you going to vote for”? To my surprise, the winner ended up being PZ Myers!!? An atheist??

Wait a minute! How is this possible? Everyone KNOWS that an atheist could never be elected President or even hold an elected office of any kind! But polls don’t lie!

Maybe the American public has decided to grow up! Maybe the public has learned that an atheist can rely on his/her experiences, the opinions of people they respect, their ethical instincts, and pure reason to make moral decisions, rather than having to turn to a book that is thousands of years old.

Nah – probably not. :-( But one can hope!! :-)

Well, of COURSE the American public has grown up–your PURELY SCIENTIFIC POLL proves it!!! :-P

2. Stacy S. - October 1, 2008

Oh my gosh, Chris! Thanks for commenting!
I’m freaking out a little -I never knew the power of the ‘pharyngulation’!

Bill O’Reilly has got nothing on PZ! :-)

3. garth - October 1, 2008

i’m just bummed i missed the chance to participate. i would have voted for daniel dennett.

4. Stacy S. - October 1, 2008

garth – LoL! You mean Santa Claus! :-)

Jon Stewart got 6 votes – (he was written in.)

5. Chris (in Columbus) - October 1, 2008

If it’s not too late, can I write in Joyce Meyers as VP? I think her and PZ would make QUITE the duo! :-P

6. Agersomnia - October 1, 2008

Arriving from Pharyngula. Even if I’m not from the USA, I’d have voted for PZ. He could definitely do better than any Republican, and many Democrats.

As non-politician, AND scientist, he definitely must have brains

7. Lab Rat - October 2, 2008

i was slightly worried that Obama had less votes than McCain until I realised that probably more of the PZ voters would vote for Obama.

8. Stacy S. - October 2, 2008

It shows that you need to vote though, otherwise look what could happen. Very Scary.

9. Postman - October 2, 2008

The poll was obviously hijacked by Catholics, who plan on blaming the fruits of Bush’s labors on PZ. Oh, those crafty theists!

10. Stacy S. - October 2, 2008

Yes, they don’t like him very much do they? LoL!

11. WTF Chuck? - October 2, 2008

Sorry that I missed your poll. I would have selected PZ as well, though we all know that atheists are second on list of unelectables after only the anti-Christ… on second thought there never will be an anti-Christ so I guess we’re first on the list.

12. Ed Darrell - October 2, 2008

No atheists in office? How do you explain Thomas Jefferson? Abraham Lincoln?

Or how do you explain totalitarians like George W. Bush?

13. saintlewis - October 2, 2008

“Pure reason”? Wow, that sure is circular. If only it could be shown to exist apart from a leap of faith.

14. WTF Chuck? - October 2, 2008

@saintlewis, I’m not sure I understand. Is it the word “pure” that you have issue with? I can’t see any circular logic in expressing a view that an atheist can make decisions based upon reason rather than scripture.

15. WTF Chuck? - October 2, 2008

@ Ed, from my understanding Lincoln was not a practicing Christian but also never publicly stated that he didn’t believe in God. Likewise, though Jefferson fought for religious freedom and separation, I don’t believe he ever professed to be an atheist.

The point is that these days, it’s hard to imagine a professed atheist being elected to any higher office in America, even in liberal states.

That being said, I do believe that things are getting better. More people are apparently ‘coming out’ so to speak and the fact that minorities and women are playing larger roles in politics is encouraging. It wasn’t that long ago that Kennedy had to lobby the public hard that a Catholic could be trusted in the White House.

16. Stacy S. - October 2, 2008

Ed you didn’t go to the link I inserted that leads to an article on Pete Stark – otherwise you would have noticed the obvious “tongue in cheek”.

Yes – Pete Stark is an atheist congressman.

17. metrostateatheists - October 2, 2008

Funny you should mention this. PZ gave a presentation at our school in early September, and he was joking about becoming emperor.

18. Tubbo & Dubba Tubba - October 2, 2008

Actually, (drum roll please), we are always the winners because we win at everything. Actually, I don’t think there was one time we didn’t win. If we lost, the world would cease to exist. We win.
