Would you like to take a basic science test?

June 8, 2008

I like to visit the blogs of people that take the time to leave me a comment on mine and I’m really glad that I found this site. It’s full of a lot of great science information and I found a short (26 questions) science test there that was actually quite fun for me!

I am going to give you 1 answer before you take the test because it has a misleading question.

The question is:
“How do mammals respire?”

The options were:

Aerobically
Anaerobically
Both aerobically and anaerobically —– pick this one!

Take the Test

I like science. It’s interesting to me but I’m not a scientist so keep that in mind because I’m about to tell you my grade.

I got a 76% – (80% after correction). JustSayHi - Science Quiz

Cute! Thanks for sharing. I made a B+ the first time…I guess I need to refresh some of my physics-related knowledge.

    Good Job!

    Hi Stace:

Thanks, that was fun. 84% What do you think this means though – I had to take it 6 times after viewing the answers, before I could score 100% – too much metamorphic rock for brain cells???

You shouldn’t give away that one answer. If you just gave a tip to read the question – “How do mammals respire (AT THE CELLULAR LEVEL)?” – would that work?

I think our Florida Legislators should be made to take the test before they get back to work on any more science bills. If they can’t pass it, they’re only allowed to work on the truck nutz bill. What do you think?

    You’re asking me? LoL. :-)

I think it’s referring to metabolic respiration (if there is such a thing).

Any aerobics instructor is going to answer that question properly, I’m sure. :-)

Unless I am mistaken and this is some freakish eukaryote thing that I’m not aware of, all eukaryotes (including, of course, mammals) only *respire* on oxygen i.e. aerobically. There *are* anaerobic metabolic pathways, but they aren’t *respiration* (c.f. “The Electron Transport Chain”)

There ARE prokaryotes (i.e. bacteria and archaea) that actually do respire anaerobically – using things like arsenate, sulfate, nitrate, ferric (”Fe+3″) iron, etc. in place of oxygen as the electron-sucking component at the end of the Electron Transport Chain.

I still maintain the question on the quiz SHOULD have read “What form of metabolism is present in mammals”. Then the answer they expect would be correct.

(Okay, this thing’s being a little overly-aggressive on the smiley-insertion, it seems…those are just supposed to be closing parentheses)

80% but I didn’t read what you wrote properly and went with respiration. Do’h.

I got an 88%, B+. I know I messed up the momentum of the car and truck… lol. Thanks for posting this, it was fun! :)
